Changing of the Guard

The last decade has been notable throughout all industrial sectors for the retirement of the last of the baby boomers. What makes these employees unique among today’s workforce is not only their overall experience, but their tenure with very few employers. Commonly boasting 25+ years with their last company. These employees, started at the very bottom, rose to senior management and leave not only knowledge of their companies’ products (both engineering and manufacturing) and procedures, but also important relationships and a comprehensive history of rules & regulations.

Lost Knowledge

In their place, new faces, trained in a digital age and often put into roles where the information they need to succeed, is either undocumented, misplaced, incomplete or retired with their predecessors. These new recruits typically enter these roles without firsthand experience of the products and procedures they are tasked with managing.

The rail industry is a perfect example of this scenario… In recent years we have seen not only a changing of the guard, but an industry that has seen numerous takeovers, mergers and unfortunately a few shuttering’s too. Our industry’s history of oversight as that of many others is a combination of self-regulation and federal oversight. It has been an ever-evolving beast and naturally can be difficult to keep up with and confusing to interpret.
